Thirty Years Later, Stratum Is Still Stronger Together
by Trent Kramer, Oct 7, 2026
Thirty years ago, several Midwest-based independent physician groups faced a defining choice: sell to a publicly traded Physician Practice Management Company or build something different together. They chose independence, creating a physician-led organization that preserved local control while building a shared platform for collaboration, scale, and strategic opportunity. That decision became Stratum Med.
Healthcare has changed significantly since Stratum’s founding, but the need for independent provider groups to learn from and support one another has only grown. Stratum strengthens those connections through shared insight, deeper data, purchasing scale, specialized expertise, strategic partnerships, and access to peers who understand the realities of leading physician-owned organizations.
Today, that founding purpose comes to life in practical ways. Shareholders exchange best practices, compare performance, and bring proven ideas back to their own organizations. Leaders share challenges and often discover that another group has already tested a solution, learned from it, and is willing to share what worked. Member organizations also collaborate on issues shaping the future of care, including supply chain, risk management, value-based care, emerging technologies, clinical research, and growth strategy.
Forums like the Stratum Summit bring preeminent healthcare leaders together to exchange ideas, challenge assumptions, and shape what’s next for independent medicine. The 2026 Stratum Summit was a clear expression of that purpose, bringing together leaders from 31 independent medical groups and more than 110 attendees for conversations about the forces reshaping physician-led healthcare, including artificial intelligence, value-based care, advocacy, clinical research, leadership, and operational excellence.
Those conversations matter because relationships make them possible. Meaningful innovation happens when leaders share what worked, learn from what did not, and turn common challenges into opportunities for improvement. That is what makes Stratum different: a community committed to keeping independent medicine strong, adaptable, and physician-led.
Healthcare will continue to evolve as technology, regulations, payment models, and pressures on physician groups change. What should not change is the belief that we achieve more together.
